If My Gums Have Receded, Can They Grow Back?

Gum recession is a common dental concern that occurs when gum tissue pulls away from the teeth, exposing more of the tooth or even its root. If you’ve noticed that your teeth appear longer than they used to or you’re experiencing increased sensitivity, you may be wondering: Can gums grow back after they recede? Unfortunately, gum tissue generally does not grow back on its own once it has been lost. However, there are treatments that can help stop further recession, protect exposed tooth roots, and in some cases restore lost gum tissue.

Why Do Gums Recede?

Several factors can contribute to gum recession. Gum disease is one of the most common causes because inflammation and infection can damage the tissues supporting your teeth.

Other potential causes include brushing your teeth too aggressively, using a hard-bristled toothbrush, naturally thin gum tissue, teeth that are positioned outside the normal dental arch, and certain habits or trauma affecting the gums. Grinding or clenching your teeth at night (also known as bruxism) may also contribute to stress on the teeth and surrounding tissues.

Identifying the cause of your gum recession is important because treatment often begins with addressing the underlying problem.

Can Treatment Stop Gum Disease?

First, you must understand that reversing the symptoms of gum disease all depends on how far it has advanced. If caught in its earliest stages, known as gingivitis, gum disease symptoms can often go away through stricter at-home care and a thorough cleaning by your dentist.

On the other hand, if left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis which, in severe cases, can lead to potential bone and tooth loss. In that case, your dentist can administer treatments like scaling and root planing and antibiotic therapy to remove plaque buildup above and below the gumline and target bacteria in the deepest pockets of your gums.

This is why it’s so important to see your dentist twice a year for cleanings and checkups. If gum disease has struck, your dentist will notice during your exam and can implement treatment right away before it gets out of hand.

Can You Prevent Further Gum Recession?

Although existing gum loss generally won’t grow back on its own, you can take steps to protect your remaining gum tissue.

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle brushing technique. Floss between your teeth every day, and don’t skip dental appointments. Professional cleanings can help control plaque and tartar that contribute to gum disease.

If you suffer from bruxism, ask your dentist whether a custom nightguard could help protect your teeth and surrounding structures. Again, regular checkups are key as they allow your dental team to detect an issue like teeth-grinding.

There’s more on the line than just aesthetics when it comes to receding gums. Exposed tooth roots can be more vulnerable to sensitivity, decay, and damage. Treating the cause early may help prevent the condition from progressing. A word to the wise: don’t forget to attend your biannual checkups!
